Over the past several years, our bilingual program has developed organically through the dedication of our members and the rich cultural diversity of our community. In response to parent feedback and insights gained through a structured review process, we have refined our approach to ensure that it not only supports language acquisition but also strengthens the overall educational experience of our students.
Our current bilingual model follows an additive, two-way immersion approach—a proven educational method that allows children to become fluent and literate in both English and Italian without sacrificing academic progress in other subjects. This balanced approach reflects the best practices of bilingual Waldorf schools around the world and is designed to promote deeper language acquisition, cultural connection, and academic success.
Our program aims to offer a 50/50 language balance throughout the day. In Early Years, the instructional language alternates based on our judgment to ensure all our little ones feel safe and held. This alternating rhythm creates a strong foundation for balanced language exposure while maintaining the gentle, consistent structure that young children need. In Elementary and Middle Years, Main Lessons are delivered in English, while the majority of subject lessons (such as math, science, and art) in Italian. This structure ensures that students receive equal exposure to both languages, providing consistent opportunities to hear, process, and respond in both English and Italian.
To encourage deeper language immersion and avoid disruption, live translation during lessons is used sparingly. Instead of switching between languages, our offering is delivered exclusively in their assigned language, encouraging children to engage and respond directly in that language.
We scaffold understanding using gestures, visuals, and context to help children follow along without needing direct translation. Bilingual members support individual children when necessary, but they will not translate during regular instruction.
This approach helps children become more comfortable processing and expressing themselves in both languages without relying on translation as a crutch. It also strengthens their ability to think and communicate directly in both languages.
All elementary and middle years children receive two focused language instruction lessons per week, where they are grouped according to ability. This targeted approach allows for differentiated instruction and ensures that each student progresses according to their unique language learning needs. Beginners focus on oral skills and basic vocabulary. Intermediate learners work on reading, writing, and expanding their vocabulary. Advanced learners engage in more complex grammar and project-based learning in their second language. Bilingual students participate in creative projects that integrate both languages.
This structured instruction ensures that all students, regardless of their starting point, have the tools and support needed to develop fluency and confidence in their second language.
By consistently speaking in our native or assigned language, we help the children associate specific languages with specific adults, which strengthens language retention and encourages them to respond in the appropriate language.
In the early years, children naturally absorb both languages through songs, verses, and rhythmic activities. This early exposure helps them build a strong foundation in both English and Italian.
Older children develop confidence as they engage in structured lessons and social interactions in both languages. The consistency of hearing one language from a specific adult helps them process and retain new language skills more effectively.
To support this model, we ask that parents partner with us in helping their children thrive bilingually. Older children joining who have no experience in the second language will be expected to receive two additional language support sessions per week outside of their time with us. This will help them catch up and feel more confident.
We also encourage parents to organize cross-language playdates and social interactions to foster confidence and motivation in using the second language. Social interactions in both languages help children feel more comfortable and capable when communicating with their peers.
We provide guidance and recommendations to help parents support language learning at home. Working together as a community strengthens the bilingual experience for every child.
